چکیده

This paper provides an analytical solution for the time-dependent performance evaluation of truck handling operations at an air cargo terminal. The demand for loading and unloading operations is highly time-dependent and stochastic for two classes of trucks. Two heterogeneous handling facilities with multiple servers are available to handle trucks assuming exponentially distributed processing times. Trucks are routed to a handling facility depending on the current state of the system upon arrival. To approximate the time-dependent behavior of such heterogeneous queueing systems, we develop a stationary backlog-carryover (SBC) approach. A numerical study compares this approach with simulations and demonstrates its applicability to real-world data.

Performance Measure Evaluation of Port Truck Trip Reduction Strategies

The Ports of Long Beach and Los Angeles are the largest container port complex in North America and fifth largest in the world. Growth in U.S. Pacific Rim trade has put pressure on the landside transportation systems serving these two ports. In order to address this growth and mitigate environmental impacts, the ports are implementing new operational strategies and infrastructure improvements. ...

A New Approach for Sequencing Loading and Unloading Operations in the Seaside Area of a Container Terminal

Due to the considerable growth in the worldwide container transportation, optimization of container terminal operations is becoming highly needed to rationalize the use of logistics resources. For this reason, we focus our study on the Quay Crane Scheduling Problem (QCSP), which is a core task of managing maritime container terminals. From this planning problem arise two decisions to be made: T...

The “Door to Door” Movement of Goods

1. A back-to-back cargo movement is generally understood as the transfer of loose goods from one truck to another---in its literal form, positioning two trucks with their backs to one another. Primitive variants involve laborintensive handling and placement of cargo on the ground during the transfer. This process inflicts serious time delays and damage to cargo and is widely avoided in modern t...

Energy-efficient rail guided vehicle routing for two-sided loading/unloading automated freight handling system

Rail-guided vehicles (RGVs) are widely employed in automated freight handling system (AFHS) to transport surging air cargo. Energy-efficient routing of such vehicles is of great interest for both financial and environmental sustainability. Given a multi-capacity RGV working on a linear track in AFHS, we consider its optimal routing under two-sided loading/unloading (TSLU) operations, in which e...
